Peaches are in season, which makes me happy. I love peaches and nectarines and have been buying a lot at farmers markets lately. I was having a peach and banana smoothie one day, and it reminded me a somewhat strange drink I used to love when I was a kid growing up in Japan. It’s called “mixed juice” but it isn’t actually juice. It’s fruit-flavored milk made with mostly canned fruits and milk. You can order this drink at some coffee shops and restaurants in Japan.
Today I’ll make a healthier vegan version of “Japanese mixed juice.” You need a variety of fruits. I think the combination of banana, peach, pineapple and orange makes the drink tastes close to the “mixed juice” that I remember.
Peaches should be the main ingredients. You can use white or yellow ones. I used white ones today but I think yellow ones may work better to create “mixed juice” taste. You can also use nectarines.
I won’t have step-by-step instructions today because all you need to do is blend all ingredients! You may want to use frozen bananas to create more creamy texture. This drink is creamy and sweet but also has a little tangy note from orange and pineapple. “Mixed juice” that you can order in Japan is overly sweet from canned fruits and added sugar. This cleaner version has natural sweetness but not super sweet. I like this cleaner version lot better! You may want to add more dates if you like it to be very sweet.
- 2 large or 3 medium peaches
- 1 medium banana
- ⅔ cup pineapple
- ½ cup orange juice
- 1 cup plant-based milk
- 3 dates
- Blend all ingredients!
