When I see Asian pears at farmers markets, I feel fall has come. When I lived in Japan, I only ate Asian pears when I wanted to eat fresh pears. “Western” pears were only available in a can. After I moved to the United States, I had fresh “Western” pears but I didn’t like them much. I thought “Western” pears are too mushy and not flavorful.
What are Asian pears? There are many variety of Asian pear like apples but they are simply called Asian pears or they are called their variety. I don’t know what variety these Asian pears are but these are my favorite. I buy these at a farmers market. They are crisp, very juicy and very sweet. You can probably eat their skin but I don’t. I enjoy eating them but I also like to juice them.
Another fruit I like to juice is pomegranate. Their seeds are too hard for me to eat, and I seldom eat them. I only eat them when they are in a dish when I eat out. At home, I just juice them.
I came up with this fall juice recipe a couple of years ago, and it’s been one of my favorite juice. It requires only three ingredients – Asian pear, pomegranate and lemon. Lemon is used to prevent browning of pears. Asian pears brown pretty quickly once they are cut so I usually drink this juice right away.
There is no step-by-step instruction today. You’ll just juice them with whatever juicer that works for you. I use a horizontal single auger juicer. The juice is pink and pretty to look at. It also tastes sweet but little tangy. Enjoy the pretty fall juice!
